The program included a presentation of Julien Friedler’s "Around the Boz In 80 Years" art project, video projections, a Jack Balance performance, played by the actor Ivomir "Kenny" Ignatov, a small guitar concert by the students of the Music Academy in Plovdiv. The debates, around the theme of commitment in art, have gathered professors of art and music, artists and psychotherapists.

Be Art and Jack Balance - 12/05/2007

January 14th, 2008
Be Art Show Poster (12/05/2007)

The 4th Be Art Show in Latin America had something special. It took place on December 5, 2007, during the "noche de la exposicion" (Gallery Night), DacilArt Gallery, in Buenos Aires (Argentina). The star of the show was obviously Jack Balance, the famous character from Julien Friedler’s Book of Boz.

This colorful character was in the object of an auction sale, which would provide the buyer the right to bring him back home for 3 days and draw, paint, picture him,… Julien Friedler describes this process as "collector’s art", according this Be Art proposition : "To seek art in unexpected places." Besides, a lottery was organized, with this prize : a 10 minutes date with Jack Balance during the night.

Loncopue Be Art Competition

December 19th, 2007
Loncopue, un village d'Argentine

Loncopue is a small town, a place where the wind blows, in the Neuquén province, in Argentina. It’s the place Julien Friedler and Carmen Ferreyra, representing Spirit of Boz in Latin America, chose for the first Be Art Competition, which took place at the end of October 2007.

This competition was open to everyone, artists or not, "profesionales y aficionados", just as the other Be Art projects, on the proposition that "in everyone there’s an artist sleeping."

BebozCast-episode 1

November 23rd, 2007

This first episode is an introduction to Julien Friedler’s Spirit of Boz : often complex ("and thus interesting"), this work invites people to a journey and attempts to propose an "added value of soul".

Be Art art show

September 7th, 2007
Be Art art show, 08-05-2007, Buenos Aires

The first Be Art art show was held on Saturday August, 25th, 2007 in Buenos Aires (Argentina), showcasing the work of ten young artists (most of them are in the first years of their careers as professional artists), along the "Around the Boz in 80 Years" and "Forest of Souls" projects.

The artists :

Agustina Mihura
Constanza Giulani
Debora Zilberman
Joaquin Sola
Maica Gonzalez Venzano
Maria Bedoian
Maria de las Mercedes Reina
Nanci Alfonso (Fundacion PH15)
Nadia Gomez
Paula Fassina

Carmen Ferreyra, curator and co-organizer of the show :

"People began to arrive at NUN at 7pm, right when we opened the doors and the music started. The DJ was Macarena Silva, our coordinator in Chile (besides being a Psychoanalyst, she is a DJ). At 930pm we had a formal presentation of the project, where Majo and I explained Be Art to the public and introduced the artists to them as well. There were so many people that the place ended up being too small and people had to listen to this presentation from the sidewalk. It was really crowded, and you could hear people on their cell phones inviting friends to come over.

The show lasted for 5 hours (from 7pm to 12am), and we had to close the doors because we were returning the rented speakers and dj equipment… if not… I am sure it could have lasted a lot longer.

There was also a dark room in the basement, where we put my old tv showing a video by Agustina Mihura, and where we also had the Boz Shop and the Give Up coffin. We have collected some objects already.

The group of friends from PH15 was really happy about this. It was one of first times that they show their art at an exhibition.

We were all very touched by this event. All the people that is working with the Boz in Buenos Aires was working there: Majo Carvajal, the Boz Girls, Tomas (video), Pablo (video editor), Paola (finances and organization), and Daniela and Martin (both photographers) and me, of course.

The night could not have been better. We had champagne and sushi (one of my best friends is a well known chef in Argentina).

And, on top of that, the works by Coty Giuliani and Paula Fassina were sold."

Give Up

May 19th, 2007
Give Up - an art project by Julien Friedler

The first "Give Up" object, Julien Friedler’s latest art project, which started on May 6th 2007.

On December 2nd, 2006, in Brussels, the Night of Boz was the starting date of “Around The Boz In 80 Days”, Julien Friedler’s first “Be Art” project. Be Art relies on the artist and writer’s ambition to put the human being back in the center of the art practice, through series of works “created by and for the masses, on the basis of a minimal support”.

To date, “Give Up” is the third, and last, work that Friedler initiated in the Be Art framework, following “ Around The Boz In 80 Days” and “The Celestial Tramp”. It was presented and started during the first Be Art Brainstorming, which took place in “The Boz atelier” in Brussels, on May, 5-6th, 2007. It will last 10 years.

What is it exactly ? The work is based on the donation of everyday objects by anybody. It’s all about renunciation and giving up. It is structured in 2 parts. First, we forget the donator and put the object in the light, interrogating it, unlike “Around The Boz”, in which the object (the questionnaire) disappears behind the subject (the answers). Then, in a second movement, the subject is back, in all his singularity.

The work will be thought in 4 levels :

The museum aspect (The Cabinet of Trivialities)

Imagine a collection of showcased objects visited by an alien. These objects may be precious or trivial, but aren’t in any case insignificant. They are the reflection of an era, the state of a world. Each one is paired with an identification sheet, attempting to express its very substance.

Each sheet will be structured in 4 groups :

- the category : the kind of object;

- the composition : the physical aspect of the object;

- the social insertion : the utility (function) of the object;

- the symbolic value : the metaphors related to the object.

The Totem

Every year, an object will be highlighted, chosen. It becomes the “totem” of the year, an imaginary matrix. From product, the object then becomes producer. Along the artists’ imagination, interpretations and associations who will take over it. Other (visual, literary, musical,…) works could then be created.

The Human Chain : from Waste to Subject

Like a baton passing from hand to hand in a relay race, the object becomes a witness, a source of human interactions.

Imagine an object given to someone (A). A keeps this received object and gives up another one to someone else. This someone in turn accepts this "gift" for offering something else to another person. And so on, to form the longest chain possible.

We get the name of each giving person and possibly a picture of the given object. We suggest everyone who will to join a personal work of art inspired by the object : text, photo, video, music,… This work could be offered to the Foundation Friedler.

Besides, we’ll think about a virtual chain, using emails and other electronic messages, where the particpants transmit virtual reflections of actual objects.

In this process, real or virtual, the waste object welcomes back the subject, this one who had been forgotten in the start. What closes the circle and balances the project…

The Bonfire of the Vanities

The dismissed objects, which won’t have been chosen for their own features or won’t have been totemized, will be destroyed. One will visualize performances where this annihilation will become a show. The ashes will then be placed in urns which will be designed on this purpose.

Ashes ?

So, a new “object”, which will symbolize the ultimate meaning of Give Up : a chimera struck in flight.

This first object will be also the 2007 totem.

On May 5th and 6th, 2007, the first Be Art brainstorming will take place in Brussels. It will be the occasion to evaluate the different current and future projects.

"The Forest of Souls" and "The Celestial Tramp" will be the themes of Saturday, with a summary of the progress of both projects by Julien Friedler, a commented projection of the feature about Agnes’ trip in Rwanda and, finally, Carmen and Gabrielle presenting their work in Argentina and New-York. On Sunday, a new project, "Give Up", will be presented and launched.
